Spending the time trying to put together our science demonstration has shown me how much more work needs to go into a science lesson versus other lessons since you need to include safety and also there is usually far more resources needed, since most science demonstrations can be rather resource intensive. Even our demonstration, which was dry ice, soap, warm water needed to also have towels, safety goggles, gloves, tongs, we used food dye to make it more obvious that the bubbles were gas and not water. For such a simple experiment, there was just so much needed along with the containers of course. I am now starting to see that science lessons are more so labour and supply intensive than difficult usually. I was very much scared for teaching science since my comfort levels with science are in places like genetics and evolution which is not something you really see until you get into the upper levels so the idea of having to teach things like the water cycle and features of plants and animals had me rather worried.
Having to see how much more planning goes into a small 15 minute science demonstration compared to a whole 30minute lesson in English Language arts is wild especially since I have written many full lessons for a 30 minute duration in less than half the time that it took to write up the 15 minute demonstration. Since the demonstration involved finding all of the safety precautions and all of the steps to be sure that if someone else does this lesson that they would also be safe.
