WHAT WERE THE STATIONS

My reading station for the kindergarten was a game that I found online but built my own resources for it. It was a game which used a fidget spinner which they were supposed to spin the spinner and try to say as many of the words from the list as possible before the spinner stops. My peers’ stations within the room were a play-dough building the letters station and a writing on whiteboards station.

THE EXPERIENCE

What I learned for my station was that I needed to make the text bigger most likely specifically for this class due to there being a student with lower vision and possibly the larger text would have made it easier for them to read, however there is also a chance that the student was more distracted by the fidget spinners and was not trying to read the words. I wish I had a chance to introduce the activity in advance and let the kids all have a chance to just mess around with the fidget spinners as toys because there were quite a few students who were detracted by the spinners. I also wish I had made a few other board options since I did have a few students who finished all 5 versions before the time at the station ended, so I wish I had made more options for them to try. However, I am happy with how the station went for the first time, I will most likely make these changes to the activity and use the activity during my practicum for literacy.

CURRICULUM

This fits into the Curriculum for kindergarten by the big idea of Playing with language helps us discover how language works by having the students practice using different words in different orders to practice using the sounds but in a game format. They also worked on the content portion of the curriculum of phonemic and phonological awareness through practicing saying the words, and that includes the sounding out if it is a word they don’t know how to say.

Here is my boards from the activity.

Thank you Allie for the image of the station
